Her early childhood was spent in Austria with a focus on education. One of her fond childhood memories was of attending the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. With the turmoil of war appearing on the horizon the decision was made that the three children would leave Austria to go and attend university in Great Britain. While attending school, tragedy struck with the loss of both parents. This left the three children to find there own ways to make do. Edith took a job with a prominent family as a nanny to their children. During this time she met George Winney who had finished his military service. Courtship began and they were married in a church service in England in the year 1950. On April 16, 1955 the family, now including two sons Michael and Phillip arrived in Canada. They settled in the then small town of Milton on an apple farm. George secured permanent work at the Rockwell plant where he worked his whole career.
