VAN SICKLE, Helen
Helen Van Sickle (nee Kovacs) passed away peacefully in her 98th year on April 28, 2021 at Caressant Care in Harriston, Ontario. She was predeceased by Omer, her beloved husband of 52 years. Helen was a loving and devoted mother and mother-in-law to Susan and Ian Alexander (Delaware, Ohio), Patricia and Patrick Phelan (Toronto, ON) and Bill and Rose van Sickle (Harriston, ON). She doted on her nine grandchildren and families, including seven great-grandchildren. Helen is survived by her dear sister, Elizabeth Harris.
Of Hungarian descent, Helen emigrated to Canada with her family from Czechoslovakia at age six years, initially to Alberta and later settling on a family farm in Chilliwack, BC. The eldest of six children, Helen, a registered nurse, moved to Toronto where she met Omer and moved to Campbellville. Helen enjoyed baking, preserving the bounty from her garden, nurturing the many flowers that adorned their home, needlework and reading. She was active in the St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Women’s Institute, Milton Hospital Auxiliary and Canadian Red Cross. Helen’s greatest fulfilment and enjoyment was with family. She was kind, generous and always happy to participate and help others. Helen cherished her many friendships.
We are grateful for the excellent care and support that Helen received while a resident of Caressant Care over the past decade. Special thanks also to the friends from Campbellville and St. David’s Church who kept in touch with Helen over the years. She so enjoyed your visits and cards.
A family funeral will be held at St. David’s Presbyterian Church in Campbellville. In lieu of flowers, donations to Milton District Hospital or St. David’s Church would be appreciated.
