Obituary of Gladys Hume

HUME, Gladys Pearl Surrounded by her family at her home on Tuesday January 18, 2022 at the age of 88, Gladys passed away on her own terms. Born November 24, 1933 on the family farm in Esquesing Township. Daughter of Frank and Olive (Christian) Ruddell, Gladys moved to Hamilton at the age of 14 and stayed as a boarder while she finished high school and played for the Canadian / US women’s basketball league on the Golden Girls team, as well as playing in the Hamilton Ladies fastball league. Shortly thereafter she met her husband to be, Sherwood Hume and they were married in April of 1953. After living for a time in Hamilton and Burlington, they settled in Milton where they raised their family and operated a trucking business. In 1980 Gladys and Sherwood purchased and moved to their farm on Fourth Line where they established Hume’s Auction Farm in 1985. This auction site is still actively operating to this day, and is well known in Milton and the surrounding communities. A longtime member of St. Paul’s United Church, Gladys was also a member of the Eastern Star, worked very hard for the Milton Steam Era group, was a 30 year volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society and served for 30 years as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Milton Fire Department. She was predeceased by her husband Sherwood (2017) and an infant daughter. She is survived by her sons, Frank and Gord; grandchildren Suzanne (Jon), Kenny, Ashley (Kyle), Melissa (Ben) and Shelby as well as by 11 great grandchildren. Sister of Robert Ruddell of Espanola. And also missed by her faithful guardian and companion Brutus. The family extends their thanks to KuKu and all of the PSWs, nurses and doctors who cared for Gladys in her home and a special thanks to Judy Hunter for providing her with hours of piano music to listen to in her final days. If desired, memorial donations to one of Gladys’ favourite charities would be appreciated; St. Paul’s United Church Milton, Canadian Cancer Society, Milton District Hospital Foundation or Townsend Smith Hospice Foundation. We ask our family and friends to join us for a Celebration of Life on Sunday May 15th, 2022 at 2pm at Hume’s Auction Farm, 9313 Fourth Line Milton ON.
